Der Flugplatz Gatow hat zwar eine lange Tradition in der militärischen Luftfahrt, aber auch eine kulturelle für Veranstaltungen jeglicher Art. So zeigen die Bilder, die uns Henric Lewkowitz zusandte, viele verschiedene Sportveranstaltungen: Polo, Rugby und Cricket. Wovon wir noch keine Fotos bekommen haben: es sollen in Gatow während der Britischen Zeit zahlreichen Hochzeitsfeiern abgehalten worden sein. Wer hat eines und schickt es uns zu? Am Tag der offenen Tür wird es in Gatow auch einen Flair von damals geben. Das endgültige Programm für den Tag der offenen Tür können wir Anfang kommender Woche veröffentlichen. Übrigens: haben Sie jemanden erkannt, den Sie von früher kennen?

Gatow Airfield has got a long tradition in military aviation, but there is also one for cultural events of many kinds. Pictures we received from Henric Lewkowitz show various sport events: Polo, Rugby and Cricket. What we do not have pictures of yet: it is said that during the British Era many wedding ceremonies were held here. Who has got one and sends it to us? On the open day there will be a flair of former days, too. The final program for the open day is to be published next week. By the way: did you recognize anybody you know from back then?
Am 30.03.2012 wurde in Frankfurt a. Main im Rahmen einer Feierstunde der Berliner Luftbrücke gedacht, mit dabei Ehrengast Col. ret. Gail Halovrsen. Das Luftbrückendenkmal (Hungerharke), wurde an einen neuen Standort verlegt, um auch zukünftig präsent zu sein. Initiator war das Luftbrücken Chapter Frankfurt e.V. Ingo Federhenn, Teilnehmer an der BERLIN-PATROL 2011, war auch dabei. Ihm wurde die Ehre zuteil, Gail Halvorsen im Jeep zur Feier zu fahren. Anbei einige Eindrücke. Während in Frankfurt gefeiert wurde, laufen in Berlin die Vorbereitungen für BERLIN-PATROL in Mai auf Hochtouren. Wir werden ab heute darüber als “news” berichten.

Frankfurt / Main, March 30th 2012. The Berlin Airlift is commemorated with a ceremony in presence of Guest of Honor Col. ret. Gail Halvorsen. The Airlift Memorial (“Hungerfork”) was moved to a new location to be present for the future. The ceremony was initated by the Luftbrückenchapter Frankfurt e.V. Ingo Federhenn who is a participant in BERLIN-PATROL 2011 was there, too. He was granted the honor to be the driver for Gail Halvorsen with his jeep. Here are some impressions. As Frankfurt was having its event the preparations for BERLIN-PATROL in May are in full swing. We will report on that as “news” starting today.

Das Luftwaffenmuseum der Bundeswehr arbeitet mit Hochdruck an der Restarurierung der DC-3 C47. Dieses Flugzeug war zum Ende der Luftbrücke 1949 als letzte Maschine in Gatow gelandet. Der damalige Pilot Selwyn David Evans der Royal Austrialian Airforce – später Air Chief Marshall – wird zum Rollout am 12. Mai in Gatow erwartet und wird sich hoffentlich über ein frisch restauriertes Flugzeug freuen können.

The Air Force Museum of German Airforce is working with high involvement on the restauration of the DC-3 C47. This airplane was the last one to land in Gatow during the Berlin Airlift in 1949. Pilot Selwyn David Evans of the Royal Australian Airforce – later Air Chief Marshall – is to participate in the rollout-ceremony on the weekend of May 12th. Hopefully he will be happy about the new shiny airplane.
Frank Henkel, Bürgermeister und Senator für Inneres und Sport, hat am 29.02.2012 die Schirmherrschaft über das Projekt BERLIN-PATROL 2012 “Airlift Spirit” und das Videoprojekt für Schüler “Frag mal Oma – ask grandma” übernommen. Damit erhält die Projektreihe weiteres Gewicht und öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit.

Frank Henkel, Mayor of Berlin and Senator for internal affairs and sport, has taken the patronage for the project BERLIN-PATROL 2012 “Airlift Spirit” and the videoproject “Frag mal Oma – ask grandma”. With this step the projectseries receives further public attention.
Am Anfang der Woche trafen sich auf dem Gelände des Luftwaffenmuseums v.l.n.r. Neil Howard, Frank Knox (Deputy Chairman of Royal British Legion – Berlin Branch ), Andreas Bonstedt (Bundesgeschäftsführer des Förderverein Luftwaffenmuseum der Bundeswehr), Thomas C. Smith (Chairman of the Royal British Legion – Berlin Branch) und Michael G. Notbohm (Liaison Officer BERLIN-PATROL). Neil Howard wird aus Groß Britannien mit dem Projekt Berlin Train über 700 Britische Berlin-Veteranen nach Gatow und Berlin führen. Sie werden am British Day und einige vielleicht auch am Tag der Offenen Tür (13.05.2012) dabei sein. Besprochen wurden bereits einige Programmpunkte und organisatorische Dinge.

At the beginning of the week (f.l.t.r) Neil Howard, Frank Knox (Deputy Chairman of Royal British Legion – Berlin Branch ), Andreas Bonstedt (Federal Director of the Friends of the Bundeswehr Air Force Museum), Thomas C. Smith (Chairman of the Royal British Legion – Berlin Branch) and Michael G. Notbohm (Liaison Officer BERLIN-PATROL) met in the Air Force Museum. Neil Howard is to bring some 700 Berlin Veterans of the British Forces to Gatow and to Berlin with the Berlin Train Project. They will participate in the British Day and some perhaps even at the open day (May 13th, 2012). They arranged some program details and organisational matter.
AFN kommt zurück nach Berlin… Was sich viele Berliner gut vorstellen können, wird für ein Wochenende Wirklichkeit. AFN Europe wird bei BERLIN-PATROL 2012 mit zwei Redakteuren dabei sein! Die Abstimmungen mit dem News Bereich und der Bundeswehr laufen. Die Redakteure werden aus Berlin berichten und auch an der Gedenkfeier am Luftbrückendenkmal in Tempelhof teilnehmen. Nach einem initialen Telefonkontakt war das Interesse des News Bereichs sehr schnell geweckt und eine Entscheidung für Berlin schnell getroffen. Wir werden sehen, ob wir alte AFN-Berliner interessieren können… AFN Berlin

AFN to return to Berlin… Something many Berliners hope for, becomes reality – for one weekend. AFN Europe will participate with two producers in BERLIN-PATROL. The coordination with the News department and the Bundeswehr is ongoing. The producers will report from Berlin and will also participate in the commemorational ceremony at the Airlift Memorial in Tempelhof. After the initial phone call the interest of the News Department was rose quickly and the decision for Berlin was made. We’ll see if we can thrill old AFN-Berliners with that…AFN Berlin
BERLIN-PATROL wird eine besondere Ehre zuteil: der Regierende Bürgermeister von Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, hat durch die Abteilung Protokoll der Senatskanzlei 30 BERLIN-PATROL Fahrzeuge mit Teilnehmern zur offiziellen Gedenkfeier der Stadt am 12.05.2012 am Luftbrückendenkmal in Tempelhof eingeladen. Dort wird in einer hochoffiziellen Zeremonie im Beisein von Klaus Wowereit, Botschaftern, Militärattachées, Veteranen und geladenen Gästen der Berliner Luftbrücke und ihrer Opfer gedacht.

BERLIN-PATROL is granted a special honor: the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, has invited 30 BERLIN-PATROL vehicles and participants to the official commemoration ceremony of Berlin to the Airlift Memorial in Tempelhof on May 12th. The Department of Protocoll confirmed the invitation this week. During a high official ceremony with participation of Klaus Wowereit, Embassadors, Military Attachees, Veterans and invited guests the Berlin Airlift and the victims will be commemorated.

Das Projekt BERLIN-PATROL wird immer bekannter. Nicht nur, dass mittlerweile mehr als 7.000 Besucher die Seite besucht haben. Nein! Der Verein USMVC e.V., der das Projekt mit initiiert, hat die erste Spende erhalten. Das Geld wird für die Mitfinanzierung der BERLIN-PATROL 2012 eingesetzt. Das zeigt uns, dass wir auf dem richtigen Weg sind und dass es wohl noch viele Menschen gibt, die das Projekt gut finden und unterstützen wollen.
So wurden am 6. Dezember die Mitglieder des Vereins “Kameradschaft 248. GSU e.V.”, und zwar der Vorsitzende Gerhard Zellmer und Vorstandsmitglied Carsten Schanz in der Britischen Botschaft in Berlin vom Vize-Botschafter Andrew Noble und dem Leiter der Abteilung „Politik“ und Pressesprecher der Botschaft, William Gatward, empfangen. Während des Treffens wurde auch für Anfang 2012 ein erstes Gespräch über die mögliche Unterstützung der BERLIN-PATROL 2012 vereinbart.

The project BERLIN-PATROL achieves more and more recognition. Not only that more than 7.000 users have visited the website. No! The charitable club USMVC e.V., which is co-initiating the project, has received the first donation. The money will be used to cofinance BERLIN-PATROL 2012. It proves to us that we are on the right track, that there are many people out there who like the project and who wish to support.
On December 6th members of the club “Kameradschaft 248. GSU e.V.“, as are the chairman Gerhard Zellmer and member of the board Carsten Schanz were welcomed at the British Embassy in Berlin by Vice-Embassador Andrew Noble and William Gatward, Head of Press, Public and Political Affairs. During their meeting an initial get together at the beginning of 2012 was agreed upon to discuss possible support for BERLIN-PATROL 2012.

Berlin, 16. November, 2011:
Michael G. Notbohm traf Gail Halvorsen auf dem Gelände des Luftwaffenmuseums in Berlin-Gatow und überreichte ihm eine Anerkennungsurkunde. Gail Halvorsen hatte bereits 2010 Kontakt zu BERLIN-PATROL aufgenommen und sich für das Projekt ausgesprochen.
